Probably one of the most famous U.S. fighter units from WWII was the Flying Tigers, and this is the plane they used. It was obsolete at the start of the war, but it was tough and reliable. Here it is the P-40 Warhawk.

Want more reading on the Flying Tigers read this: http://www.amazon.com/Secret-File-John-Birch/dp/0929292804 John Birch is one of my all time heroes, and once you read that book he will be one of yours as well. BTW, he was a missionary whose main focus was saving souls not politics. If I tell you more, it would give it away. Just please read the book it has my highest endorsement.

One little tidbit about the P-40 is that it was the plane used by two of the six American pilots that made it into the air and fought at Pearl Harbour. Those two pilots accounted for seven planes between them and made quite a few more go down over the ocean from running out of fuel.

That book looks really interesting. I'll have to get a hold of a copy and read it.
