The F-22 is a stealth fighter that was originally designed to replace the aging fleet of F-15 Eagles used as the United States air defense fighter. It has been quite controversial at times, and is no longer in production, government contracts now being placed for the new F-35. In spite of any thing that might be said, the F-22 is quite an impressive aircraft, capable of exceeding 1200mph, and flying 2000 miles without refueling. Its armament consists of a 6 barreled 20mm Gatling gun and around 9000lbs of bombs, missiles or a combo thereof.

That is quite an amazing plane! Imagine how fast 1200 mph is? Surprised Shocked

I had no idea they could make planes that flew that fast.

BTW...what made this plane controversial? Was there a problem with it?

I really like the shape and design of this plane. (and I like the pictures you posted as well.) Very Happy

Many Blessings!

What made it controversial is its high cost, high maintenance and a lot of people believe that the stealth capabilities are highly overrated.

Do you have any pictures of the newer F-35 that you mentioned? I would like to compare it to this fighter here.

Thanks! Very Happy

I think, overall, I like the looks of the F-22 better. How about you?

If the F-35 is the "new improved" fighter...what improvements did they make to the plane?

The F-22 seemed to have quite impressive abilities already, IMO.

How could they improve on those?

God Bless!

In my opinion, the F-35 is in an entirely different class from the F-22. I would classify it as another failure of engineering. It is an attempt at making one tool do all jobs, and it wont do any of them well. For example, the F-35 has a 37mm Gatling gun. Fires at somewhere in the order of 2000 round per minute, and it only carries 180 rounds. It can only carry four air to air missiles, or a similar number of air to ground stores. Being VTOL, (vertical takeoff and landing) and STOL (short takeoff and landing) capable I would imagine that it has very high maintenance. Possibly even higher than the F-22. Now, this is all just opinions that I have formed from my reading. It looks like the F-35 has been modified recently, and it may have better performance in some ways than it did. I will do more research.
