The Arado Ar 234 was the first operational jet-powered bomber. Build by the German Arado company, only 210 were built before the war ended.
The prototypes were largely complete by the end of 1941, but they had to wait until February 1943 for the engines, two Junkers Jumo 004s. The first prototype finally flew in June of 1943.
The Ar 234 finally became operational in September 1944. Though fast enough to be immune to Allied fighters while in flight, landing was another problem. Like the Me 262, the Ar 234 was very vulnerable while taking off and landing, and several planes were shot down while doing so.
The most notable use of the Ar 234 in the bomber role was the attempt to destroy the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen.
